How to Prepare For Your First Physical Therapy (PT) Appointment

Physical Therapist
Attending your first physical therapy visit? Here are a few tips to help you prepare:
1. Bring insurance information
2. Bring the referral (if one is needed)
3. Come to the appointment early. Expect to fill out paperwork on your medicial history, current medicial status, prescriptions, emergency contacts, etc.
4. Dress comfortably. Wear tennis shoes and clothes that allow for active movement.

During your first visit, the physical therapist will formulate a plan of care. And he may send you home with instructions for a home exercise program. It's important to understand all directions and exercises the therapist assigns to you. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to address them with the physical therapist. A PT can assign you to a program, but only if you understand and complete the program will you see its benefits.

Many people tend to feel sore after a physical therapy session. Be sure to discuss how to alleviate sore muscles with the PT.

Your physical therapist will evaluate your progress over time and may restructure your program, so be sure to discuss any concerns or problems with him.
