As a former Director of Volunteers at at hospital for over 5 years, I learned a lot about the "invisibility" volunteers often feel and how the organization assumes they feel appreciated, and miss the link to satisfy the volunteer's need for appreciation. It takes a simple visit, kind word and a GENUINE expression of appreciation to retain volunteers - not a once-a-year event. They are an amazing group (those who genuinely commit to serve - not just to meet a personal motive) and I salute them! I saw that there is life beyond what we give professionally in our careers that makes a difference - both while still working and while retired.
